John Collias

John Collias - Artist - Boise, ID No one sees Idaho quite like John Collias sees Idaho. And few artists’ bodies of work showcase such a lengthy and detailed adoration of their home region. In a diverse career spanning the early 1940s through the present day, Collias has devoted himself to capturing the many faces of Idaho, from those of towering mountainsides and crumbling miners’ shacks to the hundreds of portraits that made up his weekly “Portrait of a Distinguished Citizen” feature for 30 years in the Idaho Statesman. These images are from the limited edition book John Collias: Round About the Boise Valley, the first and only compilation of Collias’ prolific output, collecting the military posters and artwork he created as a soldier at Boise’s Gowen Field during World War II, vast and colorful landscapes and murals, and the portraits and illustrations he has continued to create into the twenty-first century. Collias takes viewers on a ride from the bustle and optimism of Boise in the 1940s and 50s to the timeless calm permeating remote towns like Yellow Pine, Placerville, Atlanta, and Idaho City, and then to the remote aspen groves and boulder fields marking Idaho’s unmistakable high-desert landscape.
